Hindu Marriage culture and rituals
The major few steps as per the Hindu weddings, forming an integral part of the Vedic marriage:
1- HALDI CEREMONY:
Turmeric (Haldi), water, and oil are combined to create the Haldi paste that is applied to the couple during the Haldi celebration. Some people sometimes put in milk, rose water, or sandalwood powder to intensify the effects of the Haldi. Indian families take great pleasure in this colourful tradition.
Usually a day before the wedding, haldi ceremony preparation starts. The bride’s and the groom’s sides participate in the haldi ritual. The bride and groom are covered with paste during the morning haldi function, covering their faces, necks, hands, and feet. Close friends and family members wait in line to apply haldi paste to the bride or groom. The ritual gradually becomes fun and everyone starts using it on one other. The bride and groom then take a ceremonial bath after the ceremony.
2-MEHENDI CEREMONY:
This is one of the most fun-filled ceremonies of Brahmin wedding. Mehendi ceremony is conducted just a day before the wedding. All the females of bride’s family and groom’s family apply mehendi on their hands. Even the bride smear special mehendi designs on her hands and feet to complete her wedding look. Mehendi ceremony is also considered one of the auspicious ceremonies as this is the symbol of marriage. The females of the family sing and dance on the traditional folk songs. This ceremony is all about fun and enjoyment.
3-BARANUGAM-BRIDE'S ENTRY TO WEDDING VENUE:
As the groom arrives at wedding venue, the females of the bride’s family welcome the groom at the wedding venue, Bride's father with priest who welcomes the groom with a sandal and turmeric paste. After entering the mandap, the groom wears jenui and dhoti.
4-GAURI PUJA:
In the Gauri pooja, the bride offers special prayer to goddess Gauri for taking blessing from her for her happy and fulfilling married life.
5-WEDDING CEREMONY:
The bride and groom sit together in front of the holy fire. The Lord Agni is worshipped by sitting in front of the holy fire.
6-KANYADAN:
The kanyadan ceremony take place where the father of the bride places the hand of his daughter in the groom’s hand and expect that he will take her responsibility. The priest chants the holy mantras in front of the fire.
7-PANI GRAHAN:
In Pani Grahan, the bride groom stands facing west, while the bride sits in front of him with her face to the east. He now grasps her right hand while reciting a Vedic mantra.This grasping of the hand is to be done in one of three ways, according to some Grahyasutras: the groom holds the bride’s whole hand including the thumb.
8-SAPTAPADA RITUAL:
A knot is tied between the groom’s scarf and the bride’s dress, this knot symbolizes the bond of marriage. The couple then takes seven steps that represent nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, progeny, long life, harmony, and understanding, respectively.
